CBS rejects ad by militant atheist group

For reasons that are more than a little unclear to me, CBS has declined to run an ad by the dopey, slack-jawed former ballerina ballet dancer Ron Reagan on behalf of the noxious Freedom From Religion Foundation.

The text of the ad reads:

Hi, I’m Ron Reagan, an unabashed atheist, and I’m alarmed by the intrusion of religion into our secular government. That’s why I’m asking you to support the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the nation’s largest and most effective association of atheists and agnostics, working to keep state and church separate, just like our Founding Fathers intended. Please support the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Ron Reagan, lifelong atheist, not afraid of burning in hell.

FFRF had asked for the ad to be run on 60 Minutes. CBS declined to run it at all. This, after all, is one of the most dishonest television networks in an ecosystem where dishonesty in the norm. It was on CBS’s 60 Minutes that the scurrilous attacks on President Bush took place. So Reagan’s ad would have fit right in with the tenor and substance of that program. Plus, no one under 70 would have watched it.

CBS, of course, has the right to decline any ad it wishes, within certain legal limits. But just as CBS can refuse to run an atheist message (in this case the both the messenger and the actual script would have done more damage that good to FFRF), so, too, it can refuse to run a religious message.

In a culture that is actively trying to drive religion from public view, this is a dangerous precedent for people of faith.
